Provide access to network-like parameters

• Distributed-system resources already have network-like parameters
• Desire equivalent parameters for local resources
  • e.g., disk "ping" to show latency
  • needed for trade-offs between local and remote resources

Existing resources are preconfigured templates

• Don't need to completely specify to access resources
• Provides "fast path" recognition by resource provider
